How I scout and select locations that elevate editorial photography.
Location scouting is one of my favorite parts of editorial work. The right space can transform a good photograph into something unforgettable.
I look for three things: light, texture, and context. A location needs at least two. A sun-filled room with interesting walls but no connection to the subject might not serve the story. But a space that connects to who the subject is, with beautiful natural light? That is where the magic happens.
I always visit locations at the same time of day we will be shooting. Light changes dramatically, and what looks promising at noon might be flat at golden hour. I take test shots with my phone to study how the light falls.
Sometimes the best locations are not locations at all—they are a corner of someone's home, a particular park bench, or a quiet street at a specific time of day. The best editorial work happens when the location feels like a character in the story.
