How I create space for authentic moments during portrait sessions.
The best portraits happen between poses. They are the moments when the subject forgets the camera is there—when a laugh becomes genuine or a gaze drifts to something just out of frame.
My job is not to direct every movement. It is to create an environment where these moments can emerge. I start with conversation, not camera settings. I want to know what makes someone laugh, what they are proud of, what they are thinking about.
When the camera comes up, I give direction that creates structure without rigidity. 'Look toward the window' rather than 'turn your head 15 degrees.' The small freedom in that instruction often leads to the most natural expressions.
The result is portraits that feel alive. Not perfect, but true.
