Why I prefer available light and how it shapes the mood of every photograph I take.
Natural light is unpredictable, which is exactly why I love it. You cannot control the sun, but you can learn to read it—to understand how morning light wraps around a face differently than golden hour, or how overcast skies create the softest, most flattering shadows.
My studio has large north-facing windows. On a cloudy day, the light is perfect for portraits. On bright days, I use sheer curtains to diffuse it. The result is always softer, more dimensional than artificial light.
When I am on location, I scout spaces based on their light. A plain room with a beautiful window is more valuable to me than an elaborate set with poor lighting. The best photographs happen when the subject is comfortable and the light is doing the work.
